Plugs

Types and Safety Features

The design of electrical plugs varies dramatically around the world, with over a dozen different standards (Type A through N) that differ in shape, size, voltage, and current rating. A major distinction is the presence of a grounding pin.

  • Two-Prong Plugs: These plugs are ungrounded and typically used for smaller, lower-wattage devices that are double-insulated, meaning they have an extra layer of insulation to protect against electric shock.
  • Three-Prong Plugs: These plugs include a third pin for grounding or earthing. This is a critical safety feature. The grounding pin is connected to a ground wire that provides a safe path for stray electrical current to dissipate into the ground in the event of a fault or surge. This prevents the device’s metal casing from becoming electrified and causing a severe shock.
