Rotary Switch

Common Types and Uses

Rotary switches are known for their reliability and ability to handle high currents. Their distinct, tactile “clicks” for each position make them easy to operate without looking.

  • Multi-Position Switches: These are the most common type. They are used in appliances like ceiling fans, where a single knob can control off, low, medium, and high speeds. They’re also found in older devices like electric stoves to select different heating levels for burners.
  • Rotary Encoders: While similar in appearance, a rotary encoder is not a switch but a sensor that converts angular position into a digital signal. It’s often used for volume controls on modern audio equipment and in robotics to measure rotation.
