Types of Electric Test Pens
While the classic neon test pen is still common, modern versions have evolved.
- Non-Contact Voltage (NCV) Testers: These pens are the safest and most convenient option. They work on the principle of capacitive coupling, detecting the electric field radiating from a live conductor without making physical contact. They typically emit a light and/or a beep when a voltage is detected. They are primarily used to check for AC voltage.
- Digital Test Pens: These are an upgrade from the simple neon pen. They often include a small LCD screen that displays the approximate voltage level, providing more information than a simple on/off light. They may also have additional functions, such as continuity testing.
